Hedge Maintenance
If you're after a hedge maintenance service we’re here to help with our fixed price hedging and pruning options. We support heights up to 4 meters that would cover most hedges.
Here is our recommended guide on service intervals for common hedging plants.
Buxus
Most Buxus species - for that manicured look year round we recommend fortnightly trimming between October and April and monthly or bi-monthly for the cooler months. Over summer we can stretch out service intervals to two months however your hedge will lack that desirable ‘sharp’ look.
Viburnum/Lilly Pilly/Murraya
Generally speaking, these species grow rapidly over the warmer months of the year. Most notably towards the end of summer and early autumn. Over winter, growth slows enough that a trim may not be required for up to 4 months.
For peak growth periods we suggest a monthly trim for hedges under 2 metres and once every two months for larger hedges in order to keep costs down.
For the rest of the year it's a case of keeping an eye out for excessive growth and trimming only as you need.
Cypress Varieties
Leighton Green, Spartan Juniper - For fine leafed screen plants we suggest a quarterly trim for most hedges.
However for larger hedges it is an option to stretch out service intervals up to 6 months. In most cases this is an adequate interval that keeps your hedge well groomed while not breaking the bank.
Camellias, Azaleas and other Rhododendrons
Most cultivars are slow growing. Hence we suggest only 3 trim every year for both small and large hedges. Between the months of May and September, we prefer to them thrive and showcase their characteristic flowers over the cooler months of the year. That would give your garden a welcome dash of colour.
Hedge Reductions
If your hedge has been neglected or is looking a bit cross eyed a reduction might be required before we can start maintenance. You may even prefer to bring the size of hedges down so you can look after it yourself.
Reductions are generally pricier than a maintenance trim, sometimes even up to 10 times more than a simple maintenance trim. This is because reductions take time to get right. Also due to the quantity of vegetation removed, reductations require waste to be taken away and this adds to the cost.
It’s always best to get reductions done sooner rather than later. The longer the delay, the longer it takes not to mention the increased risk of damage to your hedge.
However, hedge reductions may also leave your hedge looking bare and ‘sticky’. While most hedging plants can recover from a significant trim some may not. Most notably, common screening plants such as Leighton Green, Leyland Conifer (Cupressocyparis leylandii) and Spartan Juniper (Juniperus virginiana/chinensis) are unsuitable for big reductions,
Either way, it is all the more reason for trimming hedges on a regular basis.
